2.20.26

Mental health care is no longer a hidden conversation; it is as essential as physical health care, and professionals are in demand. With demand for counselors, coaches, and clinical professionals on the rise, Nashville State Community College is helping students turn their desire to support healthy communities into careers through its social work pathways.

The social work program, offered online and at the North Davidson campus in Nashville's Madison neighborhood, is part of the School of Business and Professional Studies.

General education courses are available at any of the college’s locations.

For high school students interested in educational opportunities leading to a degree, dual enrollment may provide a jump start. Many general education courses within the social work program can be taken as part of the dual enrollment curriculum, both at the North Davidson campus and online, and possibly at their high school.

Most positions require a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work. In Tennessee, social workers are licensed through the Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure Chapter 1365-01.

Career Opportunities

Mental health, counselors, and social work professionals play a vital role in helping individuals prevent and manage challenges and think through scenarios in their everyday lives. They work in diverse environments, including child welfare and human service agencies, healthcare organizations, educational institutions, and both public and private sectors.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a deficit of social workers. This highlights the need to place greater emphasis on educational pathways and career opportunities. With the growing prominence of artificial intelligence, the U.S. Career Institute ranks this profession among the lowest-risk for automation.
