Big Change to my.NSCC.edu and NS Online/D2L Login Starts 10/15/2024

10.15.24

Nashville State is changing how students, faculty, and staff login to applications, including my.NSCC.edu and NS Online/D2L.

We are adding an extra step to verify the user's identity before they can gain accessAll NSCC email accounts are currently under the same multi-factor authentication (MFA). We believe this information is important for you to know in case students come to you with questions.

*This is important because my.NSCC.edu is used for registration, add/drop classes, financial aid, and student account balances and payments and NS Online/D2L is used to access important course information.

What is the change to my.NSCC.edu and D2L Login?

  • NEW Username: You will use your student email (@my.nscc.edu) not your A# (Your student email address shows in your my.NSCC.edu homepage or you can look it up now!)
  • Password: No change if you have already updated your password to 16 characters. Need to update your password? Do it now via the myNSCC website. Click “Password Not Working?”)
  • NEW Authentication Step: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Verify your identify as we already do for NSCC email and similarly to your online financial or social media accounts. In most cases, MFA at NSCC means typing a two-digit number into your phone’s or tablet’s Microsoft Authenticator app. If you do not have a phone or tablet that you can use to download the app, then contact the Technology Service Desk now! There are alternatives and they can work with you to determine the best one for you.

How will it work? - First, we will ask users to login to my.NSCC.edu and D2L with their Nashville State email (not A#) and PasswordSecond, users will type in an extra authentication. Which in most cases is simply a number sent to a phone as a code that can be used only once.

*As a reminder, users should already be familiar with multi-factor authentication when accessing Microsoft 365 resources including email, we are just expanding it to other applications.

When is the change? - October 15, 2024 (the 1st day of Fall Break).

What should you do to be ready?

  • Know your NSCC email address that ends in @my.nscc.edu (students) or nscc.edu (faculty/staff).
  • Know how to login to your NSCC email off campus which already requires use of the Microsoft Authenticator app. That way you will be prepared to login to myNSCC and D2L off campus when the change begins Fall Break.

How do I get and use the Microsoft Authenticator app?

The Technology Service Desk developed detailed instructions here. Make sure you download the Microsoft Authenticator app that looks like this.

Why are we making the change?

Our Cyber Security Insurance requires this change. We need to avoid hacking of the Nashville State systems you need and protect your data.

What should you do if you have questions?

Contact NSCC’s Technology Service Desk for questions or assistance: 615-353-3278 or servicedesk@nscc.edu. More information about Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) can be found on the service desk knowledge base.

A person will be required to use two different sources (factors) to verify identity to gain access to our network systems:

  1. Something You Know –username and password, and
  2. Something You Have – a phone or passcode, to authenticate and gain access to an account. For example, this may be a smartphone or tablet using a code, an app or a hardware token device.
