Nashville State Partners with American Academy of Medical Sales to Launch Workforce Training Program
Nashville State Community College's Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education has partnered with the American Academy of Medical Sales to offer a new 10-week program designed to equip participants with the skills and industry knowledge needed to pursue careers in medical sales.
Classes will be held at the college's White Bridge campus in Nashville.
The program is expected to offer up to three cohorts each year, based on demand:
- Winter cohort: January-March
- Spring cohort: April-June
- Summer cohort: July-September
Applications for the Winter cohort open Aug. 3.
Medical sales representatives sell products and services to health care providers and facilities. Career opportunities include pharmaceutical, medical device, health care management services, and medical supply sales. These careers often offer flexible work environments and strong earning potential.
Participants will receive hands-on technical training in Nashville State’s mock operating rooms, where they’ll work with surgical instruments, learn surgical techniques and operating room protocols, and gain experience in a simulated surgical environment. They will also receive career placement support and access to a professional recruitment network.
Coursework covers regulatory affairs, medical and product management, intellectual property, and marketing strategy. No prior medical or sales experience is required.
Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Certificate of Completion. Although a formal industry certification or license is not required for medical device sales, completing this program demonstrates specialized industry knowledge, strengthens sales and product expertise, and enhances credibility with employers, giving graduates a competitive advantage in the job market.
The program is designed for individuals who are interested in healthcare but prefer a career outside of direct patient care. It is well suited for those with backgrounds in healthcare, sales, athletics, military service, or other professional fields who are seeking to transition into the medical device industry.
Medical device sales is a unique profession that combines clinical knowledge, technical expertise, and business acumen. Representatives are trusted partners to surgeons, nurses, and healthcare teams, providing education, procedural support, and product expertise in some of the most demanding clinical environments. Success requires professionalism, integrity, strong communication skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning as medical technology continues to evolve.
The American Academy of Medical Sales prepares students to enter the profession with a strong foundation in operating room protocols, anatomy, medical technology, and the interpersonal skills needed to build credibility with healthcare professionals and contribute to improved patient care.
According to the American Academy of Medical Sales, the program is one of the nation's only medical device sales training programs developed in partnership with a community college that also offers surgical technology and nursing education.
