Edwina Mateso and Milly Flatt, soon-to-be graduates of Nashville State Community College, have each been awarded the prestigious Scarlett Family Foundation Scholarship, a competitive honor supporting students pursuing a bachelor's degree in business or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) fields.

Each year, the Scarlett Family Foundation partners with Oasis College Connection to offer a scholarship that awards four students up to $30,000 per academic year. The funding can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment. For the 2025–26 academic year, the Scarlett Family Foundation awarded more than 100 scholarships in total.

It is renewable for up to four years or until recipients complete their undergraduate degrees.

"The Scarlett Family Foundation exists to support Middle Tennessee students just like Milly and Edwina - students who see educational attainment as the on-ramp to a bright future,” said Katie Hazelwood, program officer, Scarlett Family Foundation. “We celebrate the tireless efforts of these scholars and the Nashville State and Oasis College Connection staff who have encouraged them. The Foundation is grateful for the opportunity to support Milly and Edwina as they pursue their bachelor's degrees."

Mateso is graduating from MNPS Early College High School, a National Blue Ribbon School located on Nashville State’s White Bridge campus, with an associate degree in business administration.

Accepted to Lipscomb University, she plans to major in business with a concentration in accounting, and later pursue a career in law focused on business or social justice.

Flatt recently earned her associate degree in biology. A dedicated student and peer tutor at the Learning Center, she supports others in subjects including statistics, biology, and chemistry.

She plans to transfer to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in Fall 2025 to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

The Scarlett Family Foundation Scholarship empowers exceptional students like Flatt and Mateso to pursue their academic and professional aspirations—and make a lasting impact in their communities.
